The BMW X6 was the brave little guinea pig in the luxo-crossover-coupe segment and Mercedes-Benz is done observing the experiment. By all accounts, the X6 has been a surprising sales success with 46,404 global sales just last year, and now Mercedes wants to join in the fun.
Daimler AG just announced that it will build an X6 fighter based on the M-Class SUV. According to a report by Automotive News, the new Benz will likely be called the MLC and production will start as soon as 2015 at the automaker’s U.S. plant near Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Details are few, but we expect Mercedes to follow the same formula as the X6, which is based on the X5. That means it should get sleek sheet metal to attract younger buyers (who could care less about cargo space or head room for their rear passengers). Also expect the MLC to get the same V6 and V8 engine choices offered in the M-Class. We can’t say if the Bluetec diesel will carryover as well, but there’s a good chance that the folks at AMG will work its magic on the MLC if Benz truly wants to take on the X6.
The MLC will be the fifth model added to the automaker’s U.S. factory, which currently churns out the M, R (yes, it’s still around) and GL-Class. And last week Daimler announced its plan to spend more than $2 billion at the plant to make room for the next-gen C-Class, set to start production in 2014.
