Spied! Mercedes-Benz SLK AMG Caught Testing on the Nürburgring

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK was met with mostly lukewarm responses from readers in the February 4 edition of “Refreshing or Revolting.” Whether it’s the current styling trend of the blunted nose or the overall design of this new SLK, something about the car just doesn’t appeal to a number of people. However, our spy photographer has snapped a few shots of an AMG version of the SLK out testing on the Nürburgring that just might shift some of those opinions.

The car wears much less of the flat black camo it was seen wearing last year, revealing a glossy black paint job underneath. The front end is still masked, but the headlights and grille show few differences from the standard SLK model. The front valence features a different design than that of the standard SLK’s, looking a bit more muscular in some parts. The hood, at least on this test mule, looks just like the one found on the non-AMG model and gives no clues about the SLK AMG’s power plant. As far as what could be under the hood, a twin-turbo V-6 or V-8 has been speculated, and last time our spy photographer spotted it, he said it “sure sounded like a V-8.”
Moving back, we see a few tell-tale features that identify this car as the AMG model. Behind the front wheels are some pretty substantial brake discs – significantly increased in diameter compared to those of the standard model. Further back, we can see a set of quad-tipped exhaust pipes, which no modern AMG model would be complete without.
If this is the final look of Mercedes’ heavy-hitting SLK model, we’re not sure if even the AMG treatment will be enough to change the minds of its critics. Still, these subtle aesthetic changes might be all the new SLK needs to win over some of the car’s detractors. What do you think? Does the AMG model redeem the 2012 SLK’s design? Was there anything wrong with it to begin with? Does the substantial power the AMG is sure to be packing underhood outweigh any doubts concerning its styling? Share your opinions with us below.
